“…that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Philippians 2:10-11

Milwaukee Lutheran High School, NASCAR, and now the Tejas Rodeo—what could these three have in common?  Simply this: I am a huge fan of each!  I didn’t know much about the rodeo until we had the opportunity to attend one during last month’s band tour to Texas.  When they asked us to stand for the opening invocation, asked for God’s blessing on the event, and ended the prayer “in the name of Jesus,” I became an instant fan.  It reminded me of the first time I attended a NASCAR race and the same thing happened.  Those moments immediately touched my heart, because it’s the way we pray here at MLHS.

Mention the name “Jesus” in the world, and you are sure to stir up controversy.  You could find yourself embraced, or you could be criticized, even ostracized.  There has never been any other name that has drawn such a passionate response, both from those who know Him and those who don’t.  But this much we who know Him do know.  There is a day coming when every creature on earth will acknowledge Jesus as Lord.  Every person—even those who refuse to believe that He is Lord, who mock and ridicule Him, and also those who follow Him—EVERY person will bow down and confess that Jesus is Lord.  That is the day for which we are preparing young minds and hearts. We have spent this year reminding our students that they are “pursued” by the One Whose name is Jesus.  We want them to know that no matter what the world says or believes, Jesus is Lord!

Our prayer for our students, and for you as members of our school family, is to know Jesus as Lord.  We pray, as it is boldly prayed at events like the Tejas Rodeo and NASCAR, that all of us connected to Milwaukee Lutheran will proclaim the name of Jesus for all in our world to hear.  May God bless and keep you until that day when your knee will bow down and confess Jesus as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Lord Jesus, keep me and my family faithful until that day when we meet You face to face and confess You as Lord.  Amen

Athletic Department News

Spring Sports Update

Baseball—Spring training in Alabama in March  gave members of the Red Knight baseball program a chance to practice and play in great weather at great facilities in preparation for the season.  The Varsity Red Knights returned to find the first two weeks of their season washed out by poor weather and wet field conditions.   Only one game was played, a 10-8 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran on April 7.  The team returns Kirk Meyers, an honorable mention All-Conference selection last year.  There are approximately fifty three players on the FR, JV, and Varsity baseball teams under the direction of Head Coach Bob Heinkel.

Boys’ Golf—The Red Knights are scheduled to open their season on April 14 with a conference match at the Bog.  Senior Ben Schmeling, who advanced to the WIAA Sectional Meet last year, returns to lead the team. There are eighteen players in the boys’ golf program under the direction of Head Coach David Schlie.

Girls’ Soccer—The Varsity Red Knights opened their season with losses to Sussex Hamilton (3-1), Wisconsin Lutheran (4-0), and Germantown (5-1).  The team finished in seventh place in the North Shore Conference last year.  There are thirty one players on the JV and Varsity girls’ soccer teams under the direction of Head Coach Jim Van Dellen.

Softball— The Varsity Red Knights opened their season with a 15-0 loss to Germantown on April 4.  All other games during the first two weeks of the season were rained out.  There are thirty one players on the JV and Varsity softball teams under the direction of Head Coach Monica Siebarth.  The team returns second team All-Conference player Lisa Schultz and honorable mention All-Conference players Jessica Edwards and Andrea Manthei from last year.  The team is looking to improve on their seventh place finish in the North Shore Conference last season.

Boys’ Tennis—There are twenty six players in the boys’ tennis program under the direction of  Head Coach Crystal Welter.   The team is led by senior Mike Bolt, who finished in fourth place at #2 Singles at the North Shore Conference Tennis meet last season.  The team opened their season on April 5 with a second place finish at the Martin Luther Invitational, defeating Martin Luther (4-3) and Dominican (6-1) before falling to Slinger (7-0) in the championship match.  All other meets during the first week of the season were rained out.

Track—The Varsity boys’ and girls’ track team each finished in first place at our own tenth annual Chris Wilson Indoor Invite on March 29.  Winners for MLHS included Merrell Davis (LJ and 55m), Darius Harris (200m), and Will Arberry (HJ) for the boys, and Amber Leazer (55m), Sharae Grady (200m), and Rayna Thompson (LJ) for the girls.  The girls’ team was named Team of the Week by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for their victory in the Chris Wilson Indoor Invite.  The girls finished in fourth place at the Conference indoor meet at Cedarburg on April 1, led by the 4x1 lap relay team of Amber Leazer, Joshlynn Eaton, Sharae Grady, and Chelsea Jordan, who won their event.  The boys finished in fifth place at their Conference indoor meet, held in the Milwaukee Lutheran Field House on April 3.  The boys were led by Merrell Davis, who won the long jump with a leap of 22’ 5.5”.  Merrell’s long jump broke the school record previously held by Mike Funk, dating back to 1991.   The Eleventh Red Knight Outdoor Invitational, scheduled for April 12, was cancelled due to poor weather.  There are fifty six boys and thirty nine girls out for track this spring, led by head coaches Jason Jurss and Phil Koch.  The team returns state qualifiers Merrell Davis, Darius Harris, Michael Barlow, Archie Pettigrew, Isiah Sloan, Amber Leazer, Sharae Grady, Chelsea Jordan, Danielle Winston, Kayla Krause, Rayna Thompson, and Joshlynn Eaton.

The MLHS Band returned safely from their eight-day Texas tour in early April.  One hundred twenty- five students and nineteen chaperones were  great witnesses across the state of Texas.  The band performed at the Kermah Boardwalk, Lutheran High School North in Houston, Sea World, The Tejas Rodeo, and Concordia Lutheran Church in San Antonio.

Other activities included visiting the beach in Galveston and going to the Alamo, Riverwalk, NASA Space Center, and Six Flags Fiesta.  At Concordia Lutheran Church, the band was reunited with Gary Lohmeyer who formerly taught band in the Milwaukee Lutheran elementary schools and was the choir director at MLHS.   The highlight of the trip was the performance at the Tejas Rodeo, where the band experienced an outdoor Texas BBQ, enjoyed the rodeo and participated in Texas Country Western dancing.  The band traveled with band director Del Schmidt, head chaperone Miss Ellen Anderson, devotion leader Pastor Bruce Harrmann, and school administrators Paul Bahr and Dwayne Jobst.  The success of this trip will be measured in the memories that the students will have for the rest of their lives.

SENIOR PICTURES

CLASS OF 2009

It is very important that senior pictures are scheduled and completed before the senior year begins0!

VIP is the school’s official photography studio. They are best-equipped to handle the pictures of our seniors and do all contracted photos for the school yearbook. Students need to be aware that due to our agreement with VIP, promotions from other studios should not be distributed. VIP is committed to providing quality pictures at an affordable price for all our seniors.

Juniors—now is the time to start thinking about your senior year. The yearbook staff needs all senior pictures to be turned in by Friday, September 19, 2008. This means that if you plan to use a professional photographer, you need to allow them at least two weeks lead time.

Photo Requirements

**Head & Shoulders Shot

**Traditional Background

**No Hands in Picture

**No Black & White Photos.

In addition, since the yearbook is produced digitally, it is necessary that your picture arrives on a CD in Jpeg format and is at least 300 dpi.

Many professional photographers (such as VIP) are digital and will be able to handle the digital picture requirements. If you have further questions, please contact Miss Meinzen at (414) 461-6000 ext. 234, or email her at

(rmeinzen@milwaukeelutheranhs.org)

GIVING GOD THANKS FOR . . .

AUXILIARIES!!   These groups expend much time and effort to support the faculty, staff, and students and help make MLHS a better place.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS!!  Many of our students use their time and talents in meaningful ways by participating in chapel services, helping faculty and staff members with school and office duties, and patrolling the parking lot.  We have been blessed with these very special young men and women.

CELEBRATING STUDENTS

We congratulate the following students who were selected as “Students of the Month” after being nominated by their teachers this past month for their acts of Christian character: David Enters (collecting for missions), John Talatzko (returned a digital camera and $300 to owner), Austin Schloesser (assisting one of our disabled students), Miguel Sieglaff (helping the Guidance staff). Joe Burmeister (unsolicited teacher assistance), (Bryan Staedler (chapel pianist), Melissa Morris (exemplifying the Christian faith) and Tyler Sass (extremely well-mannered and polite to teachers).  Thanks to each of you!

WANT TO BE ON CABLE TV??

Now is your chance!  On Monday evening, June 2 Chicago Bears linebacker and MLHS alum Nick Roach (MLHS’03) will be the guest chef on “La Cuisine du Garage,” shown on cable TV in thirty-five cities around the U.S.  You can be part of the audience!  The audience get to see the taping of the show, receive a copy of the show, have their names in the credits, receive a complimentary jar of the show's Spice Blend,  sample the food and get a chance to visit with Nick after the taping. Tickets for the show (approximately $60), which is filmed live in West Allis, will go on sale soon and will be available in the main office.  Proceeds from the event will be combined with proceeds from the annual Red Knight Open Golf Outing and used to upgrade the technology available to students and staff at MLHS.  The studio holds forty to fifty guests. Tickets are on a first- come basis.  Get yours soon!

SEE IT BEFORE IT’S GONE!!

There‘s a new movie out by Ben Stein entitled “Expelled.”  It calls attention to the plight of highly credentialed scholars who have been forced out of prestigious academic positions because they proposed Intelligent Design as a possible alternative to Charles Darwin’s 150-year-old theories about the origins of life.  Instead of entertaining a debate on the merits of competing theories, the scientific establishment has moved to suppress the ID movement in a “systematic and ruthless” way at odds with America’s founding principles, the film asserts.  The film is showing in Milwaukee for a limited time and looks to be a interesting way to discuss the concept of creation in your family.

AFS

AFS bids a fond farewell to our two charming exchange students.  In July,   Sara Riegler will be returning to Austria and David Illescas will be returning to Ecuador.  Both have been tremendous blessings for all of us at MLHS.  Last month we enjoyed an outing at StoneFire Pizza, eating lots of pizza, drinking lots of soda, and playing lots of games!  Both David and Sara are looking forward to spring and summer in Wisconsin, including experiencing many of the festivals that Milwaukee has to offer in the coming months.

MLHS continues to look for two AFS host families for next year.  Please contact John Guilford at (414) 461-6000, ext. 268, for more information regarding this amazing opportunity to open up your home and heart to a wonderful, endearing student.

We need your help to continue our tradition of AFS students here at MLHS.  Thanks to the Bastings family and the Knapper family for hosting David and Sara this past year

MLHS LADIES GUILD NEWS

If you missed the MLHS shrimp dinner this year, be sure you watch for it next year.  The buffet was just great.  The Guild provided a large assortment of homemade salads and desserts, and the shrimp were excellent.  Thanks to Ethel Garrett and Mary Fedke, who co-chaired the entire event, and thanks to the ladies who brought food, worked during the dinner, and then cleaned up afterwards.  Thanks also to Karen Mueller’s daughter Sarah and son Nathan, who donated their time to make the event run smoothly.

$10 certificates are available for the annual plant sale.  Plant purchases can be made at the Shady Lane Greenhouse in Menomonee Falls.  The Guild will receive a 25% profit on each certificate used for purchases between April 1 and June 30, 2008.  To get more details or to purchase certificates, please contact Helen Moll at (262) 781-8772 or Barbara Kurth at (262) 252-4573.

The Guild Spring Luncheon-Donation Day is planned for Tuesday, May 20.  Television reporter Katrina Cravy will tell of  her work as a reporter at Fox News.   Luncheon tickets are $7 and may be purchased by contacting Marilyn Langenegger at (414) 771-0522.  The reservation deadline is May 12.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet many of the Guild members and find out about the many projects we do each year.
