U.S. History Semester II Project

Expansion of a Nation – Unit I

 

You will create a map of the United States showing how the country has grown physically since 1780. You can create the map in a manner of your choice. Be creative.

Here are the different periods of expansion to help you in your project:

Original 13 States         Florida Cession         Gadsden Purchase

 

Treaty of Paris 1783     Texas Annexation      Alaska Purchase

 

Louisiana Purchase       Oregon Cession         Hawaii Annexation

 

Red River Cession         Mexican Cession

 

Map size: Minimum – 8 ½ x 11 Maximum – Poster Board size

 

You cannot just photocopy a finished on out of a book. You need to create it.

You will need to write a description of each territorial gain. You will want to focus on the following items:

 

- Date of the expansion (1pt)

- People who played a part in the expansion (What did they do?) (3 pts)

- Events that led to the expansion (4 pts)

- List the names of the states that are a part of the territory today (2 pts)

 

Grading: Each description is worth 10 points 10 x 11 = 110 points

The map is worth 90 points:

 accuracy = 55 points

neatness = 25 points

creativeness = 10 points
