COMMUNITY SERVICE I  & II

COURSE INFORMATION

Number of semesters:  1 and/or 2

Course credit:  1 per semester

Open to seniors only

Prerequisites - students must apply for this course in the spring of their junior year.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is an elective course for seniors in which students do supervised volunteer work in a church setting, community organization, or school. The coordinator for the course will assist in the selection of the work site. Students must have an approved setting prior to the start of the course. Students will use their study hall(s) or work after school at their volunteer site. The coordinator will conduct a Bible study on developing a servant attitude at the start of the course. The student will be responsible for writing journals, keeping records of work hours, and writing a culminating paper on their experience. Prospective students must complete an application process. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. (limited enrollment)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Complete instructor-led Bible study on developing a servant attitude
Complete 60 hours of volunteer work 
Write 60 log entries
Write a culminating summary paper (due last day of semester)

GRADING SYSTEM (based on school's grading scale)
Progress Reports will be based on:
    % of hours recorded                20 required                 25%
    % of logs written                     20 required                 25%
    % of QUALITY of logs             100 pts. possible          25%
    % of supervisor's evaluation     100 pts. possible      25%    

Final Grade will be based on:

% of recorded hours                      60 possible              20%

% of recorded logs                        60 possible              20%

Average of quality grade                                               20%

Average of supervisor's evaluations                             20%

Summary paper                                                             20%

 

ACCOUNTABILITY LOGS - Guidelines

1.  Write 1 log for every 1 hour of service.  Indicate date of service, class period, and who you worked for.

2.  Describe the tasks you completed during that session. 

3.  Write a paragraph reflecting on the experience.

4.  Turn in completed logs EVERY Friday to Mrs. Heinkel before you leave school.  Pick it up on Monday before you go to Community Service.

 

TYPES OF SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

Milwaukee Lutheran opportunities:  Physical Education Department - ropes course, swimming assistance; Resource Study Center - tutoring, Transition Education Department - tutoring

Lutheran Special School - tutoring students, general teacher aide work

Tender Care at Luther Manor - 92nd Street - childcare duties

Congregational Home - Burleigh/Lilly - general assistance with residents

Head Start - tutoring, general teacher aide work

The Ranch - Menomonee Falls - therapeutic horseback riding - general assistance

The Blood Center - tasks vary

The Humane Society - tasks vary

Any hospital/clinic/care facility

Any church general assistance - office work, maintenance, etc.

Coaching a youth sports team - caution:  number of hours involved/logs to write up?

Any other ideas - please check with Mrs. Heinkel.

 

RESTRICTIONS:  The following are NOT acceptable options for Community Service:

1.  General techer aide work at MLHS.  Students are certainly welcome to assist a teacher during their study hall(s), but course credit will NOT be given for this work.

2.  Certain church duties - ushering, teaching Sunday School, nursery duties, etc.

3.  Attendance Office Aides and Parking Lot Patrol will NOT be accepted.

4.  Student Council work.

5.  Assisting MLHS coaches with general paper work (see #1/use study hall to help).
