Unit 1: Baitcasting, Fireball or angleball, Archery, Volleyball
Unit 2: Tennis, speedball, Racquetball, Ropes I
Unit 3: Relaxation, Badminton, Floor Hockey, Weight Training
Unit 4: Basketball, Kickball, Gymnastics, Swimming

II. ASSESSMENT

Each unit is graded in a different method. When a written test is given, it counts 1/3 of the unit grade; your skill consists of 2/3 of the unit grade. If a written test is not given, your grade is based 100% on your skill performance and the criteria set up for each unit. During the swimming unit, if you have a female teacher, you earn 7 percentage points for each day you enter the water and do the expected skills. If you do not swim, you must put on your gym suit and walk briskly around the pool wearing a heart rate monitor and keep your heart rate above 130, and you will lose 7 percentage points per day. If you change and do not walk, you will lose an additional 3 percentage points. If you do not change at all, you will lose 14 percentage points per day. The average of the final grade for the 4 units makes up 90% of the semester grade. When percentage points are lost, they are from the unit grade using the school scale as a guide.

A = 95-97, A- = 93-94, B = 91-92, B = 87-90, B- = 85-86, C = 83-84, C = 79-82, C- = 77-78, D = 75-76, D = 72-74, D- = 70-71, 0 - 69 = F

At the 6-week report, you will receive your grade for the first unit. At the 12-week reporting, you will receive your average grade for units 1 and 2. The average of the final grade for the 4 units makes up 90% of your semester grade. Fitness testing is graded on an effort basis. The semester project (fitness folder) makes up the remaining 10% of the semester grade. Specifics for the project will be given at a later date. For those students who are taking 2 semesters of PE, if you get a passing grade on your folder 1st semester, you will NOT have to do one 2nd semester.

Cheating: The Academic Integrity Policy will be followed. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a zero for that performance, test, quiz or project.

III. UNIFORM

A student enrolled in PE is expected to be in uniform each day the class meets unless the instructor gives other instructions prior to class. Students who are taking swimming or some other activity where a uniform is not used (i.e. archery) are required to have their uniforms at school and available for use on record days and any other time the instructor may announce an activity that requires a uniform. Wash your uniforms weekly. As a freshman or new student, your 1st uniform is provided. If replacement pieces are needed, they must be purchased in the main office.

A uniform consists of the following:

MLHS shirt – It must be labeled with the student’s name on the outside; It may not be torn nor tattered and can have no other writing on the shirt. Wear it right side out. Nothing may be showing under the shirt.

MLHS shorts – It must be labeled with the student's name on the outside; nothing may be showing under the shorts & it must be worn with the elastic at the waist. If the shorts are worn too low, the student will lose 1 percentage point per period and if repeated will not be allowed to play during that class period and he/she will lose 3 percentage points.

White athletic socks - any length, may have colored striping at the top

Non-marking tennis shoes – tied. Sandal cut tennis shoes are unacceptable.

Appropriate underclothing

Swimming – MLHS suit and cap (if required due to long hair)

If you have a tattoo, it must be covered up with acceptable PE attire – exception is swimming.

For INDOOR ACTIVITIES you may wear a MLHS sweatshirt and/or MLHS sweat pants. This is the only sweat suit that may be worn without penalty indoors. It is highly suggested that you put your name somewhere on the sweat suit. The sweatshirt must be worn over the gym shirt. The sweat pants may be worn instead of the gym shorts. THIS IS TOTALLY OPTIONAL – NOT REQUIRED!

For OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, a sweatshirt, warm-up suit, or short jacket may be worn OVER the gym suit (not in place of it). NOTE: This is for outdoor activities only.

Gum chewing is NOT allowed in the field house, gym, or pool. Nylons may not be worn nor may jewelry that can be of danger to you or another student. Some units are no jewelry units. Boys must wear their shirts at all times unless the instructor states otherwise.

One percentage point will be deducted from the unit grade for each part of the uniform that is missing each day, for wearing an incorrect uniform piece such as a long coat or T-shirt, and for 3 points for non-participation. Any student who wears a uniform or part of a uniform that belongs to another student will lose double the number of points. If a student rents a uniform, no points will be deducted. ($.25 per piece for girls; $.25 per rental for boys plus a $.25deposit). In case of an emergency, students are encouraged to keep a T-shirt and an extra pair of shorts in their lockers.

School policy is followed regarding tardies – On your 3rd tardy in 6 weeks, you will receive a detention. For each succeeding 3 tardies, you will receive an additional detention.

V. SWIMMING

Students in PE I and II will be ability-grouped and will take swimming during the swimming unit. All juniors and seniors, unless excused by a physician, will be required to take swimming until they pass level IV (Red Cross).
