PRE-ALGEBRA
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Instructor: Mr. Moesch
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus . . . made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant . . . He humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:3-8
CONDUCT OF THE COURSE: The course will consist of improving existing mathematical skills and developing algebraic and geometrical concepts using vocabulary, basic solving techniques, and graphing.
TOOLS FOR THE COURSE: Each student is expected to come to class with two or more pencils, three-ring binder with loose-leaf paper, CALCULATOR and a covered textbook. Pens are not acceptable for work that is to be turned in for a grade. All issued texts are the property of the school and need to have a proper book cover; failure to do so will result in a shortened lifespan of the book and forfeiture of points when the covers are regularly checked in class. A scientific calculator is needed. It is recommended that you get a TI-30 or higher. Calculators may be used on tests at Mr. Moesch’s discretion – ASK FIRST!
GRADING: All grades are based on the total accumulation of points earned throughout the 18 week semester grading period. Every six weeks a progress report will be handed out to help you monitor your success. The following is a breakdown of the grading process for this class
Six Weeks Grade:
35% DAILY WORK & “CHRIST-LIKE” CONDUCT
35% TESTS
30% QUIZZES
Completion of the daily work is essential to the success of the student in this class. Tests are also important in this class because they are the basis from which the final is designed. The students are encouraged to keep their tests for a study guide at the end of the semester. Test and quiz retakes are available if the student received a low grade. The highest grade you can receive on a retake is an 80%. If a student receives below a 70% on a quiz, the student will be required to retake the quiz before taking the test for that particular unit. The following is the grading scale used for this class.
90%-92% A- 93%-100% A
80%-82% B- 83%-86% B 87%-89% B+
70%-72% C- 73%-76% C 77%-79% C+
60%-62% D- 63%-66% D 67%-69% D+
FINAL EXAMS: A cumulative final exam will be given at the end of each semester and accounts for 10% of your semester grade.
TEACHER AVAILIBILITY: Appointments can be made for students who are seeking extra help. I am available Tuesday-Friday at 7:30 am, and I am available on student help days. I can be reached at (414) 461-6000 X277 or by e-mail at www.jmoesch@milwaukeelutheranhs.org. Please talk with me if there are any special needs that I can meet to help with your success.
STUDENT CONDUCT: The student is expected to be in the assigned seat when the bell rings ready for class. Prayer requests, attendance, and any general questions will be answered at this time. Failure to be ready for class will result in a tardy being issued which is recorded in the office. The current tardy policy is in the student handbook. A maximum of four hall passes will be give per semester. They may be used any time the student wants to use them at Mr. Moesch’s discretion. Once they are used, the student may not leave the room unless it is an absolute emergency.
Each student should treat others as Christ would treat them. Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.”
Food is not permitted (Including Candy) unless distributed by Mr. Moesch
Gum chewing rule: “IF I DON’T SEE IT OR HEAR IT – YOU CAN HAVE IT!”
Mr. Moesch’s #1 rule of conduct: RESPECT OTHERS!
J
FIRE DRILL: All students are to remain quiet and orderly process out the math wing west doors. The class needs to stay together and walk under the canopy until the teacher can take attendance and give further instructions.
HOMEWORK DIRECTIONS: The homework that is turned in should always contain the following items in the upper right hand corner of the paper; Student name clearly written, period of instruction, date the assignment was made, and the page numbers and problems assigned. Please circle or box your answers if not recorded on an answer sheet.
“HOMEWORK IS YOUR CHOICE – NOT MR. MOESCH’S”– If you are quietly working you should be able to finish your work during class most days. Some assignments will be due by the end of class! If you were talking or wasting time during the period and cannot finish your work by the end of the period, the highest grade you can earn on a late assignment is a 50%. – YES, that is an F
YOUR BEST CHOICE = Sit and work quietly.
