Course Outline/Syllabus
GRADING:
Students are given assignments (projects, quizzes, and a final project). These are opportunities to earn points. As students complete these assignments, they evaluate their success on the project. Their work is then evaluated by the instructor and a point score is given (the process used, meeting requirements, progress, effort, improvement, participation, cooperation, responsibility, use of time, and attitude can effect points earned). To offer feedback, the instructor evaluates work with a "rubric" or grading chart, with which the instructor examines certain specific criteria. Throughout the semester, earned points are accumulated and a percentage of points earned versus the total points available determines a student’s progress grade (at 3, 6, 9, 12, & 15 week grading periods and the overall semester grade). The following scale is used to determine letter grades from percent of points earned:
- 100% - 94% = A
- 93% - 90% = A-
- 89% - 87% = B+
- 86% - 84% = B
- 83% - 80% = B-
- 79% - 77% = C+
- 76% - 74% = C
- 73% - 70% = C-
- 69% - 67% = D+
- 66% - 64% = D
- 63% - 60% = D-
- 59% - 0% = F
Due dates are given (usually the 3 week progress report periods) and assigned work is expected to be completed and turned in on time. Assignments not turned in cannot earn points and substantially lower point percentages. For this reason students are strongly encouraged to complete and turn in all assignments.
HOMEWORK:
This is a studio style course that requires students to use class time to complete most assignments. Artwork cannot normally be taken home to be worked on or completed. Effective and efficient use of class time is important to success in this course. Extra time may be available before school, after school, or during study halls or lunches. Some parts of assignments may need to be done outside of class (such as sketching ideas or collecting items).
RE-DO POLICY:
All projects can be re-done. Likewise, two, three, or more projects may be turned in for a single assignment (the work with the best score will be recorded). The requirements and grading criteria remain the same. Students may be allowed to re-take quizzes, with appropriate corrective work. Final exams cannot be re-taken.
MATERIALS:
Students will be assigned a drawer and a "cubby" to store work in progress, personal tools, finished work, sketches, assignment sheets, and other items. Students will be given a pencil to keep. A variety of tools and devices are available for class use.
This class has a materials fee that covers clay, glazes, plaster, mold material, and other consumable materials.
ABSENCES:
Because of the studio-style environment of this class, students who miss school can have a difficult time getting work completed on time. Please be in class as often as possible and be sure to find out what was covered in missed class periods. The last two weeks of the semester are often especially important work periods.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
Students are expected to design, construct, glaze, and turn in their own work. Other assignments must also be done individually and honestly. In-class and disciplinary action may be taken in dishonest instances.
