COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an entry level course surveying the basics of Design including: Web Design, Graphic Design, Digital Photography, Animation, Multimedia, and Interior Design. Through these, the principles of Design are covered, as well as an introduction to career opportunities and portfolio development. This course is the pre-requisite for several Design Department courses.

GRADING: Students earn points by completing quizzes, projects and activities. Progress reports will be sent home each 6 week marking period. Student progress can also be monitored through the online grade book. (See the “Grades on the Web” section of this syllabus for more information). There is a final exam in this course on which students will show understanding of terminology, concepts, and skills through the design and creation of a major package design project and an online portfolio of their own design work. We will follow the school grading scale all semester.

HOMEWORK:  Though much of what we do will be done in the computer lab, there will be homework in this class. Instructions for homework, projects, & activities will be given in class. For major projects, instruction information also includes grading criteria and evaluation sheets for self assessment and grading purposes. Throughout the semester, a schedule of topics and assignments can be found on the school webpage.

MATERIALS: Students need a pen or pencil everyday for this course. Each student will be given an area (hanging file folder) to store materials in the computer lab. It is expected that materials will stay in the lab and be taken out for each class session. A few assignments will be printed to be displayed and/or given to students.

TOPICS / UNITS: We will cover (not necessarily in this order) the following:
Basic Design Concepts                 Package Design
Digital Photography                      Web design
Photograph Manipulation              Advertising and Marketing Concepts
Animation                                     Multimedia presentation
Interior Design                              Career & Education opportunities
Work flow & Time Management   Critical Assessment & Discussion
Portfolio Design & Management

MASTERY LEARNING: It is important that students understand (master) the concepts of this course. Some material is presented in a sequential manner and is important for upcoming concepts. The material, concepts and skills in this course are the building blocks for other design courses. Most major projects can be re-worked or fixed multiple times if necessary. Opportunities for quiz & activity ‘re-do’s may also be available. Students should use online access to grade updates to monitor their progress and current grades.

ABSENCE: Most of what is done in this course is done in the computer lab, during class time. Students who miss class time will be at a disadvantage. Many assignments have ‘hard deadlines’ because of various logistics and requirements. Students are encouraged to communicate with the instructor regarding upcoming or previous absences.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Students are expected to generate original ideas and share their own observations during critiques. In activities and projects, students are expected to complete and turn in their own work.

FREE PERIODS: The Design Lab is has space available for extra work time during periods _________________. Time before or after school may also be available. A teacher must be present for students to work in the Design Lab.   Please ask for extra time / help / clarification if and when it is needed.
