COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an advanced level course in the Art & Design department.  This course will explore Web Design from the artistic perspective.  Though this course includes technical, how-to aspects of web design, it’s primary focus is on the Design – including purpose, layout, and choices of color, scale, and text.  From simple to complex web functions, this course will explore the roles of web designers and the process of design from planning through creation to critical analysis.

GRADING: Students earn points by completing quizzes, projects and activities. Students will be often working in pairs or groups. Grading in groups will take into account the group’s solution of project, individual contributions, and teamwork.  Progress reports will be sent home each 6 week marking period.  Student progress can also be monitored through the online grade book. (See the “Grades on the Web” section of this syllabus for more information).  There is a final project (done individually) in this course on which students will show understanding of terminology, concepts, and skills through the design and creation of a major website design project and links within the MLHS online art gallery. We will follow the school grading scale all semester.

HOMEWORK:  Though much of what we do will be done in the computer lab, there will be homework in this class.  Instructions for homework, projects, & activities will be given in class.  For major projects, instruction information also includes grading criteria and evaluation sheets for self assessment and grading purposes.  Students will often present finished projects to the class for feedback purposes.  Throughout the semester, a schedule of topics and assignments can be found on the school webpage.

MATERIALS:  Students need a pen or pencil everyday for this course.  Each student will be given an area (hanging file folder) to store materials in the computer lab. It is expected that materials will stay in the lab and be taken out for each class session.

MASTERY LEARNING:  It is important that students understand (master) the concepts of this course.  Some material is presented in a sequential manner and is important for upcoming concepts.  Most major projects can be re-worked or fixed multiple times if necessary.  Opportunities for quiz & activity ‘re-do’s may also be available.  Students should use online access to grade updates to monitor their progress and current grades.

ABSENCE:  Most of what is done in this course is done in the computer lab, during class time.  Students who miss class time will be at a disadvantage.  Many assignments have ‘hard deadlines’ because of various logistics and requirements.  Students are encouraged to communicate with the instructor regarding upcoming or previous absences.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:  Students are expected to generate original ideas and share their own observations during critiques.  In activities and projects, students are expected to complete and turn in their own work.

FREE PERIODS:  The Design Lab is has space available for extra work time during periods _________________.  Time before or after school may also be available.  A teacher must be present for students to work in the Design Lab.   Please ask for extra time / help / clarification if and when it is needed.

GRADES ON THE WEB:  All grades for assignments, quizzes, and projects will be posted online for students and family access.  There is a link to Skyward's  Family and Students Access" site on the Milwaukee Lutheran’s website:  www.milwaukeelutheranhs.org  Click on the ‘academic’ link and choose ‘family access’.  Each student and parent will be given an individual username and password.  Students are encouraged to use this resource to monitor their own progress and level of success.
